And another one gone
Feb. 9th, 2011 08:19 amWhile going from work to the grocery yesterday afternoon, Sandy called. I didn't get my coat open to get my cell out in time so it went to voice mail.
They put Baby Doc down yesterday. I don't know the exact reason, but I suspect it was something to do with a couple recent episodes where he laid down and couldn't get back up by himself. He seemed in pretty good shape when I saw him on Sunday and I'm very glad I gave his neck a couple hugs then.
One of the drawbacks to having been riding and/or working at the barn for 15 years is having had to say goodbye to most of the horses upon whom I learned to ride. Baby Doc was one I spent a lot of time riding during my intermediate classes. With him, the first 10 minutes or so were always a test to see if you were really in charge. After that, he'd generally behave.
For some reason, there were a few years during which Baby Doc was absolutely in love with me. I really don't know why. There were a few times when he'd ignore his rider, break out of a line of horses that were going down to the outdoor ring, and come over to me for attention. In his retirement, he was more standoffish, preferring to just hang out with his girlfriend, Bandit.
Gonna miss that old fella. There are only four horses left that were at the stables when I first started riding there.
