Monday monday
Apr. 11th, 2005 03:03 pmCan't trust that day.
I was asked to attend the regular Monday group meeting with the vp this morning. I haven't been in on those for at least a year now, not that it's something I miss doing. On the plus side, I ended up being responsible for redefining the process by which some things are handled. On the down side, this is a fairly important thing and something I've never done before. It's nothing earth-shattering, but it is something that'll look good for me if it ends up increasing business. If it doesn't, it won't spell my doom or anything. Still, since I've not written up this kind of thing before, I'm nervous about disappointing the team and the boss.
The weekend was gorgeous, weather-wise. I'm wondering if the threat of any more frosts is past, so that I can replant the flowerboxes on the patio and maybe get another plant or two to put out there.
Unbelievably, there were folks who had booked spaces for the trail rides Sunday who didn't show up. It was a perfect day for a ride and I wish I could've gone out there with 'em. The horses were looking longingly over the fence at the grass pasture, eager to get over there and graze. It'll be a couple more weeks yet, though, before they're allowed on it. The grass has to really get established first.
A bit of sad news yesterday. I learned that one of the retired horses up at Don's place died back in December. Don went out on the 26th and found Glo dead, with a large amount of blood that had come from her mouth and nose, along with about a 20 foot trail of blood on the ground where she'd been moving before she died. At first he thought she'd been shot. Being unable to roll her over he couldn't check for a wound on the side he couldn't see. When her body was hauled away though, there wasn't any injury to be found. Talking with the vet, it's been theorized it was a bacterial infection. Apparently it's rare, but sometimes a horse will get an infection near the base of their jaw, which, over time, causes the arterial walls to be weakened. Eventually the artery bursts, and the horse bleeds to death. At least it would've been fast. I only ever rode Glo once, a long time ago, before she was retired. She used to be the bossmare in the herd and a little bit of a handfull to ride. It's sad, but I admit I'm not as affected by it as I was when Bucky or Ellie died.
Plans are getting in place for the trip to Kentucky in May. It looks like the only flights I'll be able to wrangle are gonna mean I'll be going in and out of Baltimore and have to take a couple days off work, instead of doing a half day Friday and coming back Sunday evening. It's gonna be a busy Derby weekend, with some official functions I'll have to attend. It should be fun, if tiring. I'm hoping whatever sort of pass I'll have as part of the party will maybe let me down into the paddock or stall areas to see the ponies. Apparently, there'll be plenty of nice food and alcohol, which won't be a concern since the trip to/from the track will be aboard the governor's special derby train. Golly. I'll be able to pretend I'm a member of high society.
That Sunday will probably involve a drive up to Indianapolis to see my lil sister get her Masters officially presented, even though she finished that up back in December. Apparently she's getting honored as the top student in her class. Neato!
Well back to working on this procedural stuff. Been told by my dad that I must go with him after work and get a horse-related tie for Kentucky, and that 'we may have to get you another new suit' for it too. I guess the dark grey one I got last year isn't as spring/derby-ish as one should wear.
