Feeling a bit peckish this morning and having brought only a smallish lunch to work today, I decided I'd snag something from one of the vending machines to supplement the midday meal.
I keep a bit of loose change in a desk drawer for just such occasions. Grabbing some from the drawer, I noticed a quarter that had been minted in the same year I was born. Having been born in February, there's a good chance that the coin was actually minted after my birth, but it still was the same general age as me. That got me to pondering.
How many hands has the quarter been in? How many times had it been accidentally dropped? How many people had found it. How many transactions had it been involved in? Has it been out of the US and made it back again? Has it ever been used as an impromptu screwdriver or to remove a battery compartment cover? Have any celebrities or otherwise famous people ever held it? Just how much history can one quarter have and could this one ever have been part of some important string of events?
I thought about this for a few moments as I walked down the hall. Then I stuck it and a companion in the vending machine and bought some Oreos. After all, who needs deep thoughts when you can have cookies?
Mmm. Oreos.
