Barn catchup
Oct. 2nd, 2006 08:26 amI slept horribly last night yet again. Actually, I slept okay when I was finally able to fall asleep, which was somewhere between 2:30 and 3 this morning. Since I get up for work at 6, I'm not exactly what you'd call well-rested today. Normally, I could muddle through the day okay and nap when I get home this evening. At the end of the day Friday, however, the gov't agency we've been waiting for months to sign a contract finally did. After nearly a year of hurry-up-and-wait, things will start moving forward, which means a lot of meetings and phone calls and such.
The weekend was a fairly average one. Sunday was a really beautiful day which always makes the work at the barn seem to go faster and makes me wish I could do some riding. There haven't been any really major events there lately, but there have been a few minor ones such as:
Finding out that the pony Mickey is older than I thought. I thought he was pushing 40 but it turns out he's now 45. That's positively ancient, but he's still trooping on. Some ponies are near indestructible.
Some animal got into the turtle nest I'd mentioned in a post a while back. A few weeks ago, Don and I were talking about it and went over to have a look. There was a hole there and at first we thought maybe the turtles had hatched, but it was obvious that something had dug the hole and there were pieces of shell in the grass around it. A fox or something must've smelled or maybe even heard hatching turtles and dug the nest up for a meal. I was a bit disappointed about it until Don pointed out that they were snapping turtles. It's a little harder to feel bad about it when you realize they would've grown up to gladly bite off fingers, toes, or whatever else instead of being something cute and nonthreatening like box turtles.
One of the mares, Cascade, keeps scratching/cutting her coronets up front. Looks like she does it when she gets up after laying down. She drags her forefeet along the ground or floor to get them under her. There's not much that can be done about that other than to just clean them up and maybe put some blue on them. It's a pretty minor thing.
One of the boarder horses, Max, went off to get nerved as a treatment for his navicular. He's back and the bandages are off. He'll be stuck in his stall for a couple more weeks, but he's back to his usual grumpy self already.
Cody got an abcess in a hind hoof that was obviously quite painful. I started to get a lesson in diagnosing those and such, but it got cut short when the thing opened up. Yuck.
The horses are getting fuzzy for the winter, especially the older horses. You just wanna hug 'em when they get that soft shaggy coat in.
Time for me to get back to digging through some documents for the impending work load. Whee! I can't wait til lunch time when I can sneak in a short snooze.
