Barn

The new gelding, Sebastian, seems to be working out well. He's by no means ready for beginner riders or trail rides, but I think he'll be ready to be used in advanced-intermediate and advanced classes soon. He looks like he's got a really nice trot. There's still some speculation to his parentage, since the previous owner had no real information on them. Obviously he's an appy/draft mix. Most of us are leaning toward his draft half being Percheron. He's not got the long legged, rangey movement of a Clydesdale and his head looks rather perch-ish. He's a pretty good natured fellow and looks to have settled in nicely at the barn.

Amber came in from the pasture last week with assorted scrapes on her back and sides. They were kind of hard to explain until someone observed that the locations and shapes of them would be consistent with where a male horse's front hooves would be 'during.' So it may be that one of the geldings has decided to be studdy. Joy.

Rock continues to be sore in his left fore. Looks as if it's a combination of an injured flexor and navicular. Sandy said the vet would be out this week for another look. Her tone and demeanor when she said this implies that she thinks there will be a good chance the vet will recommend putting Rock down. Poor Rock. He's really a great horse. He's quite friendly and rather willing. Very soon after arriving at the barn he was already working as a guide horse on the trail rides now and then and even was being ridden on the trail by moderately experienced riders. I know he was very popular with the students in their classes, too. Seeing him in his stall now, he's obviously in pain. We moved Cody out of the stall next to his and put Lark in there, since Rock and Lark are buddies. She spends a lot of time up against the wall between their stalls with him on the other side, as if trying to make him feel better. It really hurts inside when you go into his stall and he rests his head on your shoulder, putting all the weight of it on you as if he's just plain worn out from it all. I do hope he's not put down, but know that even if he's not, he'll probably never be rideable again.

Well, Sandy just called me on my cell from the barn. They did, indeed, put Rock down yesterday. She wanted to make sure I knew before I came in on Sunday and wondered where he was. Poor fella. I never rode him, but I'll miss him.
