Okay, it's very silly, but I like it:

I just heard from Sandy.  We lost another of the retirees at the barn.  Wheatchex was 34 and had been retired for years.

Sometime last week, she started to get a bit droopy and low energy'ish. When I saw her on Sunday, I suspected it'd be the last time.  I'm glad I said my goodbyes to her then.

I think she was the last of the truly old time school horses at the barn, meaning she was purchased by the owner before the owner before Sandy.  Back in the days when they still bred some of the mares at the barn in hopes of making new school horses.  I'm pretty sure that Wheatchex had a foal sometime back then, but I don't think it stayed at the barn.

She was always a friendly happy horse.  She never seemed to have those 'mare moments' when she was in the mood, as it were.  The past few years she started getting flirty at all the geldings, which was especially cute when a new one would arrive and she'd get all excited.  She'd been the turnout buddy of Mickey for years before he died.

I'll miss the old girl.
