Assorted weekend stuff

Fall is finally starting to arrive. It makes the Sundays at the barn a bit more enjoyable, since the cooler weather means I don't end up drenched with sweat when working. Cooler weather also seems to make the horses happier and more lively. Soon I'm going to have to switch to the cool weather barn clothes.

The day wasn't too eventful. It was a pretty typical Sunday. I did find out the name of a new boarder horse that arrived last Sunday when I was filling in as a trail guide. His name is Cool Hand Luke. He's a light mocha sort of color, makes me think of coffee with plenty of milk added. He could actually be considered some dark shade of palomino. I guess he'd be considered a pinto, since he's got various small patches of white on his neck and sides. He's really a rather cute horse. I thought he must be pretty young, around 3 or 4 years old, based upon his build and rather bright curious expression. It turns out he's actually 7 or 8. He seems pretty friendly, though I don't think he's used to too much attention from strangers.

Saturday I drove down to Ikea to finally get 2 more chairs for my dining room table. I got tired a while back of having 4 mismatched chairs so I went to Ikea and got 2 I liked. I'd have gotten four back then, but just couldn't budget it. So I got the remaining two yesterday. Now I've just got to stop using the dining room and coffee tables as convenient places to pile stuff. While at Ikea, I naturally ended up with some little impulse buys. I got some votive holders that look Christmassy, even if they aren't officially. I also ended up giving in to my love of blinky LED things and got an odd light fixture. It's about 10"x10"x1.5" and made of translucent/frosted white plastic. Inside are 3 sets of red, blue, and white LED's that fade on and off, one after the other. It's really kind of relaxing to watch. I do wish I could adjust the timing on it, since the pattern changes every second. I'd like to be able to slow that down to maybe 4 or 5 seconds between changes. It can be wall mounted or set on a table or shelf. Right now, it's on the desk by my computer. I'll probably move it elsewhere. Maybe the bedroom, since it's relaxing.

The car's trip computer calculates its mpg. I assume that it either got reset before I bought it at the dealer, or the previous owner didn't know how to shift gears very well. When I got it, it was showing around 20mpg. That started going up pretty quickly as I drove it around. It's now up to 29.4 and takes a while to move up. That's not quite as good as my average in the old car of 34mpg, but I'm not complaining. It's a much better car.
