One of the things I love about my recently purchased Elantra is the fact that I now have a CD player in the car. The factory one even plays cd-r's and mp3's. Good stuff.
Not long back, I put in a cd I'd burned long ago with some mp3's on it. Partway into the first song, the playback stopped and the player's display behaved as if I'd just put the cd in. A moment or two later, it displayed an error reading the disc's table of contents. Bleah. Well, earlier, I'd had that cd sitting in the little storage area in the dash below the radio/cd. I thought perhaps it'd picked up some gunge while in there. Wiping it off didn't help with playback. As mentioned, it was a cd-r I'd burned years back so I figured maybe it was just too worn scuffed or whatever for the player.
However, putting in a store bought cd shortly after that the player started skipping now and then and there was a bit of static mixed in with the music. Aha! I thought, it must need cleaning! So I dutifully ran a cleaning cd in it a couple times. That didn't do the trick, unfortunately.
So now I'm thinkin the player itself has an issue. I got off my butt today and called the service department at the Hyundai dealership in Leesburg. The good news is that the radio/cd has a 3 year warranty that transfers to the second owner. Yay! The bad news is that the procedure is to yank the thing and ship it off to the factory for repair or replacement. Boo. That means going for who knows how long without any sort of music in the car.
Even when I had the old car, I was thinking about XM/Sirius. I never really followed up on it though. Now I'm wondering if I should go the warranty route and be without a radio/cd player for a while and potentially end up being told they couldnt' find anything wrong with it, or if I should start researching in-dash xm receiver/radio/cd players and just replace the factory unit altogether.
Poking around the net I found a few references to this particular radio/cd having some issues and being the reason that the 05 Elantra's don't have a cd player that can do mp3's. That doesn't bode well for Hyundai replacing the one I've currently got with the same model. Of course, getting some satellite compatible one would involve installation of the radio and antennna and such and, of course, the unit itself.
Hmm.
