Stuff

Time for a mishmash of assorted recent happenings and the like.

I'm not sure whether it's allergies or something else, but I've been doing the stuffed up sinus thing since last week. No accompanying runny nose, just clogged up and some sneezing. I've also been pretty tired as well. Saturday, it got a bit worse and I ended up making a number of urgent trips to the bathroom. Ugh. Saturday night, while in front of the computer, I suddenly found myself very light headed and feeling faint. Did an emergency shutdown and staggered off to flomp on the bed, where I got to enjoy about 10 minutes of cold sweats. After that, I was just dead tired.

Sunday at the barn was pretty standard. I was really tired from the stuff Saturday night and mucking the stalls at 1 took what little energy I had left in me. Fortunately, I got that done well before the trail ride came back in, so I could sit on one of the benches out front talking to Don about two of the ponies.

Those two ponies are Chunky and Bonnie. Chunky has been at the barn for 5 or 6 years now and Bonnie has been there forever. They're both good, honest ponies and invaluable to the school. Chunky has always had some sort of skin condition on his left hind leg. It's been spreading a bit over time, but really started spreading in the past few weeks. the leg is essentially bald from fetlock to a few inches below his hip. For the third time, the vet took biopsies and shipped 'em off. The previous two times, no cause has been found for the condition. The skin isn't irritated and there are no sores (except now and then, when Chunky will scrape the skin when he's been lying down), nor does it seem to bother him at all. It's just very unsightly. It's also not really something contageous, since none of the other horses have ever picked it up. For now, Don has been trying to cover all the bases with assorted topical anti-fungal/bacterial/parasite things in a rotation. Things don't seem to be spreading at present, so hopefully that's a sign that something is working.

Bonnie came into the picture because just before the 1pm trail ride, Jirina was cleaning some of the dirt off her lower legs. Bonnie is an older mare and like many older horses, she gets incredibly shaggy in the winter. She tends to pick up a lot of dirt and mud in the long winter hair around her fetlocks. Anyway, Jirina was cleaning some of that off when she noticed that on Bonnie's left hind leg, the area just above her heel was just very short (like velvet short) fuzz with what looked like flakey skin or something on it. She pointed it out to me and we showed it to Don. You'd only notice it when working on her feet because the longer hair above hung down to cover the affected area. Don had a look and put it on the list for the vet to check when he's out again. In the mean time, before turning Bonnie or Chunky out, Don sprayed those areas down with something or other. Hopefully, Bonnie doesn't have whatever it is Chunky does. It seems unlikely since nobody else has picked up whatever condition Chunky has. Also, Bonnie and Chunky aren't in the same social circles in the herd. Bonnie isn't high ranking, but she's above Chunky and she'll chase him off if he comes too close.

In WoW, my main character finally got some more of the Might set. He's got 6 of the 8 pieces which is the closest I've had to any 'real' armor set in the game. I must say that it's not a bad looking set, aside from the helmet, but then, most all helmets look stupid on Tauren. The might helm makes male Tauren look like they either stole a spiked dog collar or like they're some sort of very pointy flower. Sheesh.

What else? Well, Friday I went down to the county courthouse to file for a concealed carry license. No huge reason for doing that aside from the fact that the course I took at the range recently qualified me for one and that it makes certain things easier when it comes to transporting and purchasing. I discovered that the folks at the courthouse are the epitome of the 'burnt out bureaucratic worker.' The woman who took my application made even stereotypical DMV folks look bright and cheery. I got the impression that I and the others at the counter were interfering with some very important nap time or something. Lots of tired monosyllabic gruntings and such were pretty much all she seemed capable of doing. While she was working on my stuff, another woman came up, apparently returning from lunch and took over after the original one finished my paperwork. When all my stuff was done, Drone #1 just muttered 'thank you' and shuffled off somewhere, leaving me to kinda stand there wondering if that meant everything was finished. Apparently it was. I did notice that Drone #2 seemed capable of actual social interaction when the person behind me in line came to the window. Anyway, in 45 days or fewer, I should get a yea or nay from the county. Odds are it'll be a yea, since it's danged hard to get turned down for such a permit in Virginia.

With the warmer weather, the CD player in the car is starting to misbehave again. I'm so tempted to just go and replace it with a satellite ready unit.

I still need to install the ham radio in the car. Haven't even gotten around to looking for a place to run cables through the firewall though, nor have I figured out where the heck I could mount the antenna. I kinda don't want to go to a mag mount one.

Speaking of radios, I've had this one in my office at work for a few years now. I just love the design of it and the sound certainly isn't bad for a single speaker and such. Is it any wonder then, that I find this attractive? If only it had older style lamps instead of LED's....
