I seem to post weekend stuff midweek. Part of that is due to putting it off and part is often due to Mondays being kind of busy.

Nugget's leg is healing up nicely. He may even get the stitches out this week. I'm sure it'll be a while before everything below the skin is healed as well. After the other horses had been turned out, we put Nugget into Firecracker's big box stall. One of the mares, Wheatchex, is currently in the stall next door which is Cowboy's.

Here are a couple pictures from the Sunday before last of Nugget's leg. Annoyingly, in the low light, the digital camera apparently decided to focus on the hay and sawdust on the floor instead of his leg. All that reddish color in the pics is Betadine, not blood or gore. Still, be warned that some folk might find the following pictures kind of icky:

Wheatchex was quite lame when the horses were brought back in last Monday. Lame enough that it took someone 20 minutes to get her to take more than a step or two to come back into the barn. The way she moved made them think she'd managed to break her leg somehow, but once she was actually walking (limping) in, the concensus was that it was something less serious. The vet's first thought was that it was an abcess, but he and Don hadn't ever seen a horse with an abcess walk the odd way that Wheatchex was walking. She was kind of swinging her left fore out wide then placing it right in front of her right fore. In any event, she's on the sick list and staying indoors.

I finally downloaded pictures I took of the swallow and turtle nests that I referenced in an earlier post and stuck 'em on the web as well.

Brand new baby swallows are not cute

No, someone didn't scalp the grass with a mower, that scuffed looking spot in the middle is a snapping turtle nest

A shot taken from the turtle nest, facing in the direction of the creek the babys'll be going to after they hatch. The creek is a good 20+ meters beyond the treeline across the road.

This past Sunday, the baby swallows had more feathers. I counted five big mouths in there that'd open up as soon as anything moved near the nest. They're really crammed in there and I wonder how long it'll be before the more aggressive ones start shoving their siblings out of the nest.

I took some pictures of course and will eventually get 'em uploaded. I was surprised that the parents didn't put up a big fuss about the human standing by their nest taking pictures. One of them did perch up in the ceiling and chirp at me, but I wasn't dive bombed or anything.
