Among the movies that are on my guilty pleasure list is one of Charlton Heston's old post apocalyptic movies, The Omega Man. It's based upon the novel "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson.
I knew a new movie based upon the novel was in the works for a while now. Today I learned that there's a teaser trailer out for it. Now I realize that sometimes a remake of a movie is better than the original, but this one I'm not sure about. Granted, one of the main reasons I find "The Omega Man" so enjoyable is because it's so incredibly 'seventies.' It's not often you have a movie with 'honky paradise' uttered by one of the characters. Omega Man is definitely not academy award material, but it's a fun movie anyway.
I guess I just find it hard to accept a remake of Omega Man that stars Wil Smith. He just seems an odd replacement for Charlton Heston. Perhaps some of my unwillingness to be optimistic about Smith in the starring role is due to me remembering hearing him on the radio back in the 80's.
However, I think one big thing that makes me less than gleeful about the remake is that, in the teaser trailer, Smith's character is shown with a wife, kid, and a dog. Is having a family some kind of requirement for heroes in remakes nowadays?
Anyhoo, for comparison, here's the original movie's trailer:
And the teaser for the remake:
