We've got a new horse at the barn.  She's a small, very cute quarterhorse mare named Heidi.  Don bought her a few weeks back and had her up at his place until last Tuesday.  She's a smallish mare with a sturdy build, which is just the size we need since we lost Bandy a couple years back.  Seems like it's a lot easier to find big horses than the mid-sized ones that the barn needs most.  Her feet seem a little smaller than I'd like, but that's not a real problem.

Heidi was still settling in on Sunday.  It's obvious she doen't like being alone at all.  When the horses in the neighboring stalls were out on the trail, she was calling and making a good bit of noise.  While she's cute, Heidi has quite an annoying whinny.

One thing of note is that there is some question about one of Heidi's eyes.  The previous owner told Don about it before Don bought the mare.  Apparently the former owner's vet had noticed something seemed not quite right about one of Heidi's eyes and an opthamologist checked her out.  I don't know all the details, but apparently something is just odd about it.  It could be something from an old injury or a defect.  Don bought Heidi knowing that in 6 or 7 years, she may end up with vision issues and have to be retired.  He decided to take the risk since she's the size the barn really needs and has a good temperament.  Even if she can only work 5 years, she'll be worth the investment.

In related news, the Sunday trail rides are continuing for now.  For how long, I don't know.  The insurance rates the barn pays to cover them is getting outrageous.  If Don does decide he'll no longer do them, I'll likely start having my Sundays free again.
