It's football season again, as I was reminded yesterday when I hit the backed up Beltway traffic on my way to the barn.
The horses are back from their vacation. Most of them with some extra padding from all the grazing. For the most part, they're more energetic and in good spirits after their rest. Nugget stayed behind at the farm. He's officially retired now. I'll miss the him but, as always, it's nice to see one of the older horses retired.
Poor Zip developed a fever on Friday and was put on antibiotics. Unfortuantely, the antibiotics apparently give him hives which he'll just have to endure for now. I have to wonder about the companies that make medications for animals, especially livestock. Zip's antibiotics come in pill form and the pills themselves are about the size of an aspirin tablet, maybe even a little smaller. For a horse the size of Zip, that means the dose is 40 pills. The things are hard, too and difficult to crush. Zip, like most horses or animals in general, is quite adept at eating around the pills. I went up to the nearby grocery and got a jar of molasses. We're going to try mixing the pills in with a cup of that and pouring it on top of his grain. It seemed to work when we tried it yesterday. I hope he's feeling better soon. Zip tends to sweat a lot in hot weather as it is, and a fever in summer heat had him looking pretty miserable. He's been getting taken outside and hosed down a a couple times a day since Friday to help cool him down.
Bonnie came back from vacation with a number of thin/bare spots that had me think she'd been getting picked on by someone. The real culprit is Bonnie, herself, though. She's been rubbing against trees and fenceposts and stuff. I don't know why. She doesn't appear to have any skin issues.
Sometime during the past week, stakes with surveyor flags popped up here and there around the barn. Hopefully this is a good sign.
On another front, I'm now the proud owner of a Wii. So far I've only got the sports pack that came with it. Fun stuff, but why the heck do I seem to always hook left when bowling, no matter how I swing the controller? I haven't hooked it up to the 'net yet, so no wii code to share.
