I happened to be looking out the office window a few minutes ago and noticed a large bird in the distance. Since I was at my desk and not wearing proper distance glasses, I couldn't see it too well. I could only see that it was something large-ish. My first thought was that it was a hawk or turkey vulture or perhaps even an eagle, but it wasn't soaring at all and the way its wings flapped just wasn't right for one of those.
Since my office window faces out onto Dulles airport, I keep binoculars handy. I grabbed them and had a look as the bird flew toward the building, then made a turn to the west, heading toward the airport runways. then on past the new control tower over there.
I'm still not sure what it was. It was definitely a waterfowl. From its build and coloration, I actually wondered if it might be a stork. However, I don't recall hearing about storks in Virginia. The way it kinda kept its head back above the front part of its neck when flying makes me think of a heron, but I've only really seen blue herons in this area. This bird was white overall, with the back half of its wings brown. It was also bigger than any heron I can remember seeing.
In any event, it was kind of a nice change from the usual robins, crows, geese, and such I usually see outside the office.
