Meet Stevie

There are a lot of birds in the barn. With plenty of beams, rafters, and other good spots for nests, plus food sources and readily available nesting materials, they love to nest in there.
Sadly, this means we sometimes find baby birds that've fallen from their nests. As I mentioned in a previous entry, that can lead to a rather unpleasant but necessary task. Not always, though.
One of the women who rides during the week and sometimes comes in on Sunday was sitting and talking to folks out in front of the barn on Sunday. She had a little box next to her. Inside was an uncovered Tupperware-like container with some paper towels in it.

Stevie appears to be a baby sparrow. He's pretty lucky that he was old enough that someone is giving him a second chance on life.
Apparently his rescuer used to raise orphaned baby birds all the time when she was little and expects he'll do fine and that she'll be able to set him loose around the barn in the near future. Until then, she gets to be awakened by insistant "Feed me!" chirps at around 4am and whenever Stevie decides he's hungry. Among the things he gets fed is canned cat food. Weird.
Stevie isn't scared of people at all, which may be a bad thing later in life. As the pictures show, he's perfectly content to perch on fingers. Any motion near his head causes an automatic opening of his mouth and chirps in expectation of getting food.
Of course, we don't know whether Stevie is a male or female. I'm not sure where the name he was given came from.
Looks like we've got a barn mascot, at least for the next couple weeks.
