Because of the holidays, there weren't any trail rides at the barn on Sunday. Once I got there, the last of the morning staff left, leaving me to mind the stables for the rest of the day. Since the school horses that're regularly turned out on Sundays weren't working, they were turned out after they got their morning feed and the morning crew cleaned the stalls, leaving me with little to do other than answer the phones and handle the afternoon feeding and watering. That's not a ton of work, but it does take a bit of time nowadays, since a lot of the horses have special requirements (meds, supplements, etc). I underestimated the amount of time it was going to take, so I didn't close up and get outta there until later than I do on a normal Sunday.
The cool but sunny weather was nice and the horses in the pasture thought so, too. A number of them laid down and sunned themselves throughout the day. I decided to try to get some pictures of them. I hadn't thought to bring a camera with me, so I had to settle for the cellphone's crappy camera.
Here's the king of the herd, Firecracker surrounded by mares (Those are Bandit and Confetti's butts on the left and Cappucino behind him. Cascade was also there, kneeling just out of the shot to the left). Mares, hay, and sunshine....it's good to be the king. Funny thing is that most of the time, Firecracker wants nothing to do with those girls. Come spring, they all flock around him and he seems to love it.

Here are Lucy and Cowboy. Lucy is lounging and munching hay while Cowboy sleeps.

Cowboy was more deeply asleep than I've ever seen a horse before. His lips and feet were twitching a bit, so I think he may have been dreaming. I walked right on up to him for a closer shot and he didn't wake up.

When I came back later to check the water in the stock tanks, Cowboy and Lucy were in the same spot. Just to make sure he was okay, I went back out and called to Cowboy. He finally picked his head up and looked at me, then stood.
Since Cascade was in the run-in shed, her little 'harem' (Blackjack and Amigo) was there, too. One of 'em, Blackjack, was having a nap.

And here's a closer shot of his head. He woke up just as I took this and gave me a look like "What? I'm trying to sleep here!"

I'm glad the herd got the day off. I kinda wish they could've been down on the grass pasture, but it's just not in good enough shape for them yet. Of course, if they had been down there, I'd probably have gotten a lot of calls and people stopping in to inform me about the 'dead horses' in our pasture. So many folk don't realize that horses do lie down sometimes.
