This and that

The job hunting continues to go slowly and poorly. While I've not been laid off yet, it's still very likely. I pretty much spend each day playing clean-up and untangling post-contract messes with the Employment Sword of Damocles hanging from the ceiling tiles.
Today's fun is trying to track down an external hard drive. One of our other offices claimed it's up here on their annual gov't property inventory. I sure cant' find it and, really, if it was here, I'd be the person who'd know where it was. I'm thinking they just dunno what they did with it and are claiming it got sent up here to get out of trying to find the silly thing.
I've yet to think of names for the male and female bettas I've got at home. Because of her color, I keep thinking about calling the female Rosie, but I dunno if I actually like that name. 'Rosie' would also make me want to name the male something that somehow matches it and the only thing I can come up with is Mr. Allnut or just Charlie. Those don't really sound like betta-ish names to me though. Betta-boy still spends much of his time trying to show off to hes neighbor and tries to impress her with his bubblenest making skills. He rebuilds his nest every time I destroy it in a water change. Poor fella. It's unlikely I'll ever let 'em in together for breeding.
The big aquarium is doing well enough, though I seem to just have bad luck with platys. When I originally got fish for the tank, I got 5 high fin platys. Both the guy at the store and I thought I had 3 females and 2 males. A while later I realized it was the other way around. I guess one of the males just wasn't grown up for one of his fins to have developed into a gonopodium. Over time, one of the males and both of the females died, but not before there were a couple babies. The younguns turned out to be one male and one female.
The female is a tiny thing and hangs off by herself. Can't blame her with 3 males in the tank. Ideally, the ratio of female to male is 2:1. To try to help her out, I went out and got 2 more females back on Saturday even though it'd really be pushing the inch-per-gallon rule for the tank size. One was a sunset variatus and the other a blue redtail variatus I got 'em home and set up a drip line to get them acclimated to the tank water before putting them in. When I went to put the new girls in the tank, one was fine, but the other was dead. She'd ben wigging out a lot ever since she'd been put in the little plastic bag at the store. I dunno if she just panicked herself to death or something else killed her. Needless to say I was a bit disappointed.
Even more disappointing is that, even though the undersized female hung around with the new girl a little at first, she's back to staying off to herself again. Ah well. I dunno what to do about her. I'll probably try to pick up a new potential friend for her this week.
Not much else is going on. I've no big plans in the works, unless one counts taking the car in for an oil change next week. Yeah, I'm a wild man.
