Well crud. I just got a text message from Sandy at the barn. They had to put Firecracker down today.
I kind of figured he'd not last the week. He'd been very droopy and unhappy looking for the past week or so. While his lungs sounded clear, now and then he make some gurgley swallowing sounds and drool a bit. I'm glad I took a moment to say goodbye to him yesterday. I was afraid I'd never see the old man again.
Firecracker was a great horse who really should've been privately owned. His mother was a school horse at the barn long before I started riding there. He was born there and worked there all his life. He was a good looking fella and fairly clever too. I'll bet that if he'd been privately owned, he could've done well in dressage or eventing.
From well before I came to the barn, Firecracker was the king of the herd. Nobody messed with him. That changed last year after he was sick, but even then a lot of the horses that'd been there a long time would leave him alone.
He got his name because he was born in July. I've been told that was either 75 or 76, meaning that he was either 34 or 35 years old when he died today. Not bad for such a big fella.
The best pic I've got of him is pretty old. He was still in great shape back then even though he was over 20 when it was taken.
