Because, for some reason, I just love similes, metaphors, analogies, and the like...
Let's say someone comes up and pokes you in the arm with their finger. I hurts a tiny bit, or, at least, is uncomfortable. It only lasts a moment, though and then it's gone. If they poke really hard, maybe you get bruised, and it's mildly sore and sensitive for a few days. Not really a big deal.
Now let's say they poke you, then poke you again, and again, and again, over and over. After a while of this, your arm starts to get sore, then downright hurt. They keep on poking. Now and then they might take a break, but soon return to poke your arm some more. Constant, repeated poking for a long, long time. Eventually, you're in a good deal of pain and have one sensitive arm. Now, let's suppose someone else comes along and lightly brushes against your arm. The arm is pretty messed up by now so that little contact elicits quite a response. You've reached a point where even some minor contact that you'd normally not even notice causes a lot of discomfort.
Now swap stress for arm-pokes. That's why some folks get blown away by things that go wrong that we'd think shouldn't phase them.
