Hazy, Hot, and Humid.

To put it mildly, the weather over the weekend was hot and humid. Sunday at the barn was almost unbearable. In addition to the change of clothes I bring to wear on the drive home, I also brought 3 spare shirts to put on when the prior ones got too sweaty. I could've used 4 or even 5. Even with the Gatorade I brought and the water fountain, it was quite an effort to remain hydrated.

I really felt sorry for the horses. Just standing in their stalls many of them were a bit sweaty. The horses working on the trail rides were really feeling the weather. They were obviously unhappy about working in the heat, but none of them got grumpy or anything. We were concerned about Baby Doc after the 2pm ride, since he came back in feeling hot and panting, but not sweating at all. I was worried he might be getting ready to colic or have some sort of heat stroke, but as soon as he was back in his stall, he happily munched his hay. I took the precaution of making sure his water bucket only had a little water in it, so he wouldn't go overdoing it, but he just drank a little and ate. I don't know why he wasn't sweating. Maybe he's suddenly gotten better heat tolerance. All the other horses were just like me: drenched and stinky. Even after a good long shower, I could still detect the faint scent of barn/horse/sweat on me.

When I went to put a bridle on Mickey, the ancient pony, for the 2pm ride, He lifted his head and tossed it and tried to back out of his stall. That's very much not like him. My first thought was that I'd managed to get the curb chain in his mouth with the bit or something. Don was in the aisle when it happened and came in to bridle Mickey, who did the same thing for him. It seemed to be something with his ears, but there was nothing obvious. He was ok once the bridle was on and we decided to check him out when he was back from the trail ride. When we took him out back after the ride, he was fine. Nothing apparently wrong with his ears or teeth or anything else we could see. He seemed more interested in trying to graze than in Don poking around in his ears. I don't know what the issue was earlier. There was nothing unusual about the bit or bridle that we could find. Ponies. Go figure.

I really can't handle the high 90's temperatures and heat indexes of 104. I'm just more a late fall/early spring type.
