Sunday at the barn was relatively uneventful, but, of course, that doesn't stop me from boring folks to tears about it...

Yesterday was a beautiful day. I got to the barn and was glad I hadn't decided to wear long sleeves. The last forecast I'd heard had been for temperatures in the mid 60's, but it sure felt like mid 70's out in the sun. Much of the day was uneventful. Bandy is still hurting. The vet was out to look at her last week. As suspected it's her shoulder, not her leg or foot that's bothering her. The consensus is that one of the horses pegged her pretty solidly with a kick. Poor girl. She's confined to stall rest for a while. Not that she seems to mind being in the big box stall that Toby supposedly 'remodeled.' The stall has been partially repaired now with two of the boards from its front replaced. The front bars are still sitting in the stall next door. Here's a picture of it. That's Bandy in there. I'd hoped she'd put her head out for the picture, but she had some very important hay eating that needed doing instead. Here's another shot showing the rail and some of the pieces of the door from the stall next door.

The trail rides went smoothly. There was only one unusual occurence, which was a big one. Around 12:30 or so, I was heading down the lesson horse side of the barn and saw one of the geldings, Amigo, was laying down in his standing stall. That's not really a very unusual thing. Contrary to what many people think, horses do often lay down. They like to rest their legs now and then too, and will generally lie down if they feel safe to do so. Anyway, Amigo didn't seem to be uncomfortable, so I wasn't concerned. It wasn't until a short while later, when he'd stood up again, that Julie came over and asked me to check on him. He was nipping and kicking at his side. That's a bad sign, to be sure. He was also looking rather uncomfortable, so I got Don and brought him out into the aisle so we could check him out. His pulse wasn't fast. There were some gut sounds, but not a lot. He wasn't happy, but didnt' seem miserable or in serious pain, so he got some Banamine squirted in his mouth and declared not fit to work out on the trail. He was up and down in the stall a few times and seemed a bit worse, so I got a halter so that I could take him over to a bigger box stall. More room to move around and he'd be far less likely to get himself cast, laying down in there.

I came up and stood beside the standing stall, just as Amigo did some more nipping at his side and started to lie down again. I gave him a couple pats on the butt and got him to keep standing. Once I was sure he wasn't going to try again, and decided it was safe to go in there, he kicked. His left rear leg flashed out in front of me, just barely missing my abdomen. A half second later and he'd have connected with me solidly. As it was, I did a kind of fast lean back and twisting motion, that threw me off balance and against the rump of Baby Doc who was in the next stall. I was a bit surprised, to say the least, but it wasn't an attempt to kick /me/, Amigo had been kicking out of discomfort. I got into the stall and got him out of there, sticking him into a big box stall. He got another dose of Banamine, since the first had been the very last in the tube and Don wasn't sure that he really got much the first time. We kept an eye on him throughout the day. After 45 minutes or so, the Banamine seemed to be having an effect and he was a lot brighter. He was even nickering and calling to his buddies in the pasture. To be safe, he wasn't turned out, though. Normally, I'd have stuck him in the empty box stall on the boarder side of the barn, but that's missing a door. Instead, I brought Toby over to the school side and stuck him in the stall by Amigo. I haven't heard anything so far today about how Amigo's doing. Hopefully that's good news.

Hmm. That's a whole lot of wordage for a 'relatively uneventful' day. See? I'll ramble on about those ponies forever, given the chance.

On an unrelated note, my new sofa finally arrived Saturday evening. Yay!
