There were some possible last minute plans for last night, but I got stuck waiting for the hvac guy at my father's condo and it was just a bit too late to try to follow up on 'em. Maybe next week.
So instead, I engaged in some
Anyway, having downloaded the World of Warcraft client Tuesday night...and wednesday morning...I decided to give it a try. I actually didn't have any problem with the client download, though it took 9.5 hours to get the 2 gig file. A couple friends had terribly slow downloads using the Blizzard client, and ended up getting it elsewhere. After installing it, it was off to the open beta. I created a Tauren warrior on eastern test server 18. (Boven, for anyone who wants to keep an eye out for him there) and dove right in.
I'm not a diehard gamer. I have very very few games for the pc and most of those I purchased months after they were really hot items. To borrow from an overworked statement 'I don't know much about games, but I know what I like' and, so far, I like WoW. The graphics are rather nice, the basic controls are straightforward, and it's been fun so far. There is some lag, which can make some things annoying, but it's not too hideous. The one thing that was bugging me a bit last night was the whole 'die and then have to trudge around forever to get back to your corpse' thing. I've heard complaints about that from friends who played Everquest. I guess it's just something one has to get used to. Still, when I ended up in an area I obviously wasn't tough enough to survive, it got frustrating getting killed, trudging back, resurrecting...then immediately getting attacked and soon ending up dead again. Argh. That happened two different times while I was playing. The first time I got lucky, and resurrected while another player was in the area. He rather nicely helped me fend off the critters attacking until I could get some strength back up, and actually get the items I was there for. I stuck around and watched his back while he took care of the business he was there for. It was nice getting that impromptu teamwork going.
Another annoying thing was folks trying to get in on some of my kills on some quests. Trying to collect x number of animal pelts or such, I'd be duking it out with a big cat, someone'd run up and 'help out'...then snag the pelt. Gah. Losers.
I've gotta figure out a good way of getting a decent amount of money in the game. My armor and such is getting to be in bad shape. Gonna have to see about trying to sell some trinkets and stuff.
I suspect I'll stick with playing Tauren for a long time. I like them more than the other races. I'm glad that the female Tauren ended up looking like the nicer pictures that Blizzard first put out. For a while there, they had some pictures of them looking a lot more brutish.
One other drawback to the game: you end up realizing that you've stayed up WAY too late on a work night. (yeah, we don't get Veterans Day off here)
