That's an obscure subject that few are likely to get**. Perhaps 'Where's the Mare?' would've been better.

Sunday wasn't a particularly cold day, nor was it windy, but for some reason I was feeling pretty cold all day long. The weather forecast called for 1-3 inches of snow in the afternoon/evening turning to sleet or freezing rain overnight. The decision was made to keep the horses in the barn rather than turn them out as usual. That meant a lot more stalls to clean and more hay and grain to pass out. It also meant some grumpy horses. They know nothing of forecasts, they only know they're supposed to be out in the pasture after the trail rides are over on Sundays. Poor critters. They have to stay in, sometimes, and it's a lot easaier to keep 'em in than it is to try to catch them in a wet snowstorm at midnight as we did one year. The oustanding event of the day, however, was...

As usual, when I got to the barn I made my rounds. Going up the school horse aisle and distributing carrots. Oh, the nickers of love I get when I show up. They quickly fade when the horses realize I'm out of treats. Anyway, after the school side, I made my usual trip up the boarder side, saying howdy to the privately owned horses and the couple school horses over there. Last week I mentioned the two new horses that had arrived. When I got to the stall of one of them, the mare Rain, it it was empty and the door was half open. I wasn't concerned, assuming her owners had taken her out to work with or groom her or something. Shortly thereafter a woman and her daughter asked Don where Rain was. The daughter had taken classes for a long time here and they'd come to visit the ponies while she was back from school for a little bit. Turns out they know the mother and daughter who own Rain. Don was kind of suprised she wasn't in her stall, since the owners hadn't been so far that day. We all went back to the stall. The buckets were there, clean and empty. The shavings were fresh and there wasn't any manure in 'em. The little sign with Rain's name on the door was still there, but the owner's locker was empty.

They had a trial period when they bought Rain, so it looks like they decided not to keep her. Thing is, on Thursday, they'd told Don they were definitely going to keep her and stay at the barn. Go figure. I don't know if Don was able to get hold of them or not to find out what was up. Odds are he's out the week's boarding fees for the time that Rain was there. The folks who asked about Rain on Sunday said that the mother of the girl who owns her is a bit of a flake and has some 'mental issues' at times. I suspect Rain is better off not being their horse. She seemed like a rather good, though green, mare and should have a good owner.
