Mail call

I want a 50's or 60's mail carrier. The kind of mailman you saw on Leave it to Beaver or any of those old tv shows. You know, the one who knows your name, always seems to come when someone is home, and delivers in any weather.

I can't say I've been having any real postal woes, but I've had a few mail-related annoyances in the past few weeks. Twice now, I've had items I've ordered that I've nearly not received. Both times I checked the tracking numbers for the packages and discovered that there'd been a delivery attempt and that they were being held at the post office for pickup. Both times, there was no notice in my mail box. Both times, on the days the delivery was supposedly attempted, the only stuff in my box were a couple bills, so it's not as if I might have missed a notice that'd gotten stuck in the pages of some ad or catalog.

Yesterday my mailbox had a decent amount of stuff in it and when I started taking it out, there was something rigid in among the other stuff. Turns out there were two dvd's from Blockbuster in there. The address on 'em is in my apartment complex, but a totally different building. I'll have to either walk 'em over and give 'em to the folks in that building myself, or try to put 'em out for the mail carrier to take to the right location. I'll probably do the former, because who knows what'll be done with them otherwise.

Since I have a friend who's a mail carrier, I know it's not the most fun job or work environment. Still, it's annoying that some of 'em do such a sloppy job. What if I decided to just keep the DVD's? The person who was supposed to get 'em would end up having to pay for them in the end, I suspect. If I hadn't checked those tracking numbers, my packages would've been sent back and at the very least I'd have been out the shipping charges. I thought about filing a complaint at the post office, but there's no fixed carrier for the apartment complex for some reason. We kinda get the carrier-du-jour.

That's why I envy the folk in the 'olden days' who knew their mailman, gave him a tip during the holidays, had 'im on their Christmas card list and so forth. Okay, I know most of that didn't really happen, but one can dream. Hmm, as long as I'm dreamin and wishing, I should throw in some 'special delivery' fantasies, too.
