Liquid hot magma

murakoziIt's no secret that I like a lot of 'old' things. Old cameras. Old a/v equipment. Stuff like that. It's why I own 16mm and filmstrip projectors, an old Minox 'spy' camera, and a radio/wire recorder/record player, among other things. I really want an old bakelite rotary phone to go with my refurbished payphone, too. I was recently given a pair of small Lava lamps. Not the full sized ones, but two 8 ounce models that were packaged together. One is the tradtitional blobby type one and the other is filled with glitter. It took me a long time to get around to actually taking the things out of their box. I confess to kinda liking Lava lamps, but I know they're viewed as kind of the cliche item for retro-kitsch.
So last night after I got home from work I took 'em out of their little box and plugged in the blobby one. A cursory glance over the listed do's and don'ts showed that you're supposed to let 'em sit turned on for at least 4-8 hours when they're new. It was around 6pm so I figured there'd be plenty of time before I went to bed to see some groovy lava action. Well as of 11pm it was just kinda a humped blob sitting stubbornly on the bottom of the lamp. I went to bed, leaving the living room bathed in eerie blue light all night. This morning a lone big blob was rising and falling in the lamp. Hooray. I left it on and came to work. Now this is a small lamp, but I was still kinda hoping for multiple blobs of hot waxy 'lava' floating around in there. I checked the official website just now, to see if maybe there were any recommendations. 'Course, one of the first things it said was not to leave the thing running for more than 10 hours. Wups. I'm sure it'll be fine, but now I'm wondering if I'm gonna come home to a burned down apartment or a big ol mess on the desk.
Still, I kinda like the little thing. Dunno what I'll do with the glitter one.
