I slept rather poorly last night. Even though I was up later than I'd intended, due to the rather good WoW session, and dead tired it took me a long time to get to sleep. I woke frequently during the night and what sleep I did get was fitful. This morning when the alarm went off, I woke with a moderate headache and spent a good 15 or 20 seconds fumbling around trying to shut the thing off.
The headache has stuck with me through the day and it's not helping things at work. Being tired from the lack of sleep is bad enough, but couple that with a headache and the stuff going on in the office today and you get a formula for not-good.
Not long back, I inherited a contract that's nearly done. I can't give any real details, but basically we were contracted to develop something for the military. They were told it could be done for $X. Well they've only ever provided 40% of $X, and we and a company we subcontracted for part of it have made tremendous progress with those meager funds. The contract is basically dying because the military keeps avoiding the issue of the rest of the funding. Anyway, this should have been a fairly easy contract to manage. Just gather the monthly info, get as much done as possible, then determine a date to stop work and tell the branch of the military involved 'Here ya go! that's all you get for 40% of $X.'
Unfortunately, there are some aspects of the reporting and such that I've had zero experience with. I can get some help from the previous manager, but he's busy as heck working for another section. I've managed to keep my head above water, barely, fortunately, and this morning I thought I actually had everything pretty much in hand. Then I got contacted asking for a monthly report that I didn't know I was supposed to compile. Well I've got every piece of that except some numbers. Now I'd just go and ask the previous manager how these numbers were obtained, but he isn't in today. Naturally, this is something that was supposed to be done 9 days ago and people want it by CoB today. I can't get hold of anyone who has the answers I need and can't determine how the numbers in previous reports were determined, given the data I have access to.
Bleah. I've spent most of the day poring over spreadsheets and accounting reports to no avail. This is something that could potential reflect very badly on me very soon and there's nothing I can do about it. "I didnt' know I had to do it" and "There was nobody to ask" are likely not going to be considered valid reasons for this being late.
